Reflective Display Optics: Outdoor Readability Without Backlight

Ynvisible’s printed e-paper displays are built on a reflective electrochromic architecture, designed to work with ambient light rather than against it. By eliminating backlighting entirely, the display achieves consistent readability in bright, outdoor environments while operating within extremely low power budgets.

Our printed electrochromic e-paper displays are fully reflective systems, designed to use ambient light rather than compete against it. There is no backlight assembly, and no requirement to generate luminance. Instead of emitting light, the display modulates what’s already there.

How It Works

Ynvisible displays are built using printed electrochromic materials integrated into a multilayer structure on a flexible substrate.

When a low voltage is applied, the electrochromic layer changes its optical state, altering how it absorbs and reflects ambient light. This controlled change in reflectance creates visible contrast between activated and non-activated segments.

Because the electrochromic material retains its optical state after switching, the image remains visible without continuous electrical input. Power is required primarily during transitions between states, allowing static content to persist with minimal power consumption.

Performance Where Light Is Abundant

Our reflective electrochromic displays don’t compete with ambient light. As illumination increases, more light is reflected at the surface, improving legibility where emissive displays begin to wash out. For most displays, the power of the backlight is at least ten times higher than the power of the panel. Reflective displays are that much more sustainable and less power-hungry than transmissive displays with backlights.

By eliminating the backlight, we remove one of the largest energy and thermal loads in a display system, resulting in a simpler, more efficient display. Optimal in sunlight and efficient in the real world.

Designed for Persistent Information

Reflective electrochromic displays are optimized for persistent information. When information like gas prices must remain visible at all times, and lighting conditions are unpredictable, these displays deliver information reliably and efficiently.
